First coup indictment in İstanbul seeks sentences for 29 police officers

The first indictment prepared by a prosecutor in İstanbul into a failed coup attempt on July 15 seeks three consecutive life sentences for 21 police officers on coup charges and up to 15-year prison sentences for eight police officers on terrorism charges.

The indictment, prepared by İstanbul public prosecutor Evliya Çalışkan, has been accepted by the İstanbul 2nd High Criminal Court.

Twenty-one police officers are facing charges of attempting a coup, while eight of them are accused of membership in a terrorist organization.

The prosecutor claims in the indictment that the police officers either did not go to their duty stations or tried to prevent people from taking to the streets to stop the coup plotters.

As the coup was unfolding on the night of July 15, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan called on the public to take to the streets to stop the coup perpetrators. More than 240 people were killed while a thousand others were injured onJuly 15.
