[BREAKING] State of emergency in Turkey extended 3 months

The Turkish Parliament has approved a motion proposed by the Prime Ministry to extend for three months a state of emergency declared after a failed coup in July.

The decision will go into effect on Oct. 19. The Turkish government decided to declare a state of emergency following a failed coup attempt on July 15 under the pretext of fighting against terrorism. However, emergency rule has enabled violations of human rights due to restrictions on certain civil liberties.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said in September in New York that thanks to the state of emergency, they are able to take certain measures they could not take under “normal circumstances.” Turkey has jailed 120 journalists and arrested over 32,000 people in post-coup purges. Reports of torture have also surfaced in international watchdog findings.
