Three ambassadors, including former Turkish President Abdullah Gül’s aide and former Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu’s ex-adviser Gürcan Balık, were arrested as part of an investigation by the Ankara Public Prosecutor’s Office into people affiliated with the Gülen Movement in Turkey.
Along with Balık, ambassadors Ali Fındık and Tuncay Babalı were arrested. Balık was detained by Ankara police on Aug. 19. He used to be known as Davutoğlu’s right-hand man.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan accuses the Gülen movement of being behind a July 15 coup attempt and has demanded extradition of Turkish Islamic scholar Fethullah Gülen from the US. Thousands of public servants, judges, prosecutors and journalists were detained by the Turkish police for allegedly having links to the movement.
