Wives of arrested officers complain husbands unjustly labelled as traitors

Must read

Wives of the 45 senior military officers who were arrested on coup charges in Sanliurfa following a failed coup attempt on July 15 have said that although their husbands had no involvement in the failed coup, they have been jailed and labelled as traitors.

The women, who established a solidarity platform among themselves, made a press statement on Thursday.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Ozlem Helvacioglu, the wife of jailed officer Fatih Helvacioglu, said not even a single soldier emerged from the military barracks and not a single gun was fired from the Sanliurfa 20th Armored Brigade Command on the night of July 15.

She said the arrested officers have nothing to do with the coup and that they are not traitors as alleged.

Helvacioglu also said the Sanliurfa 20th Armored Brigade Command took part in an operation last year to bring the shrine of Suleyman Shah in Syria back to Turkey and that the officers who are currently in jail were declared heroes and given many awards for their service.
