Influential American think tank The Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) prepared a video on Turkey’s rapid drift from democracy after failed coup attempt.
The video underlined that Turkey’s president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has initiated widespread purges in response to a failed coup attempt. Over 15,000 people have been detained and the Turkish government is also cracking down on schools, universities, and media.
Turkey is a member of NATO and a candidate to join the EU, and members of both organizations have raised alarm over Erdogan’s authoritarian consolidation of power.
