34 army generals detained for involvement in Turkey’s failed coup attempt

A total of 34 army generals across the country have been detained so far, along with nearly 3,000 soldiers, for their involvement in the failed coup attempt that shook Turkey with airstrikes on the Parliament and the presidential palace on Friday night.

Earlier in the day, an operation took place in the southeastern province of Şanlıurfa, where 309 soldiers, including two majors and three captains.

A top military official brought to a court in the province of Şırnak was accused of violating the 309th article of the Turkish Penal Code (TCK) that describes “attempting to abolish the Constitution,” and the 312th article, which defines the crime of “attempting to forcefully destroying the Republic of Turkey, and attempting to partly or completely blocking the government from functioning.”

Detentions continue all over the country.
