Police were alerted on Monday after a pilot spotted a drone en route to the İstanbul Atatürk Airport, which was the scene of a suicide bomb attack that killed 45 people two weeks ago.
The drone that was coming from the seaside by the district of Beylikdüzü was seen by a pilot while he was operating a passenger plane landing in the Atatürk Airport. The pilot reported the sight of the drone to the Air Traffic Control Center and the police were called in.
An investigation has been launched into the incident that took place in a region, where flying drones is forbidden.
Barbed wire fences surrounding the İstanbul Atatürk Airport bear warning signs that read “No Drone Zone.”
