Indictment seeks 100 times aggravated life imprisonment for Ankara bombing suspects

Indictment prepared by Ankara Public Prosecutor’s Office is seeking 100 times aggravated life imprisonment for a total of 36 suspects –including on under arrest — in the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) bomb attack that claimed lives of 102 in the capital Ankara last year.

The 571-page indictment accuses 14 of the suspects of organizing the attack, while 22 others were accused of membership in a terrorist organization. Charges of murder, attempted murder, attempting to change the constitutional order and possessing unlicensed weapons and explosives were also included in the indictment.

A verdict of non-prosecution was given for the 18 suspects including Yunus Durmaz — the mastermind of the July 2015 Suruç bomb attack in addition to the Ankara bombing and former so-called Turkey “emir” of the organization — because they were dead.

A trial is set to begin after the 4th Heavy Penal Court accepts the indictment.

The twin bomb attack on Oct. 10, 2015, was the deadliest in Turkey’s history. The death toll is 102 – including two suicide bombers — while more than 500 people were injured during the attack. Then-Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu said that the government suspects either the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) or the terrorist Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) of organizing the attack. However, documents revealed by deputies of the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) showed that the suicide bombers were ISIS members who had been under surveillance since 2013.
