Binali Yıldırım named as AK Party chairman candidate

Turkey’s Minister of Transport, Maritime and Communication Binali Yıldırım has been named as Justice and Development Party’s (AK Party) chairman candidate on Thursday.

Ömer Çelik, AK Party deputy chairman and spokesperson, held a press meeting and announced Yıldırım as the party’s chairman candidate around 1 p.m.

The party’s highest decision-making body, the Central Decision and Executive Board (MKYK), gathered at 11.00 a.m. and held a meeting that lasted around 45 minutes.

If elected in the party’s 2nd Extraordinary Congress, which is to be held on May 22, Yıldırım will become the third chairman of AK Party and replace Ahmet Davutoğlu.
