Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu is in the United States for a two day working visit, where he is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with US officials.
“During his visit, Foreign Minister Çavuşoğlu will discuss important bilateral and regional issues on the agenda with the Secretary of State of the U.S, John Kerry and his other U.S. counterparts, address to students at a university in Washington D.C. and get together with the representatives of Turkish-American community, media, academic circles and opinion leaders” a statement on the Foreign Ministry’s website read.
Çavuşoğlu’s visit comes a day before President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s visit to the US for the two-day Nuclear Security Summit to be held in Washington beginning on Thursday. Erdoğan’s visit has been mired in controversy as news reports are in circulation claiming that US president Barack Obama refused to meet Erdoğan, pointing to a deepening rift between the once close allies.
