US and Turkey target ISIL-linked smuggling network

ISIL Syria

The United States on Friday imposed sanctions on four individuals with ties to the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) following an investigation with Turkey, the Treasury Department said, Agence France-Presse reported.

The sanctions target three supporters of a people smuggling gang linked to ISIL, and one individual involved in establishing an ISIL militant training camp, the US Treasury said a statement.

The men were based in countries including Uzbekistan and Georgia, and at least one supported ISIL members in Turkey, according to the Treasury.

The coordinated action with Turkey “demonstrates our continued commitment to the defense of the homeland against all terrorist threats, including the so-called Islamic State or ISIS,” Brin Nelson, the US Department of the Treasury’s under secretary for terrorism and financial intelligence, said in a statement.

Turkey, which is a close US military partner and a NATO ally, is taking its own action against the ISIL-linked network, the Treasury Department said.
