Ten people were killed and 59 injured in a seven-vehicle traffic accident in northwestern Turkey, the state-run Anadolu news agency reported.

The accident took place in the early hours on Thursday on the North Marmara highway in Sakarya province.

Three buses, one truck and three automobiles were involved in the accident, with six of the drivers taken into custody.

The cause of the accident has not yet been determined, but officials said visibility was low in the area due to heavy fog.

Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said on X, formerly Twitter, that eight of the injured were in critical condition.

Justice Minister Yılmaz Tunç also said on X that four public prosecutors have been tasked with conducting an investigation into the accident.

Turkey has a poor record of road safety. According to the Turkish Statistics Institute (TurkStat), 5,229 people were killed and 288,696 others were injured in traffic accidents in 2022.
