Kılıçdaroğlu files 2 lawsuits against internet celebrity for $19K on allegations of insult

Former CHP leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu (l), Ahmet Sonuç or Jahrein

Main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) Chairman Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu has filed two lawsuits against Turkish YouTuber, Twitch streamer and podcaster Ahmet Sonuç, known online as Jahrein, seeking TL 500,000 ($19,115) in damages on allegations of “insult,” the T24 news website reported.

Sonuç announced the developments in several tweets on Friday.

He said Kılıçdaroğlu is demanding TL 200,000 ($7,644) for the remarks he used to criticize the politician, such as “leblebi kafalı” (roasted chickpea-brained) and “demans hastası” (dementia patient), and TL 300,000 ($11,466) in total for the expressions he used in four separate tweets, such as “şerefsiz” (dishonorable), “aptal” (stupid) and “yüzsüz” (shameless).

In the petition submitted to the Ankara Civil Court of First Instance on duty by Celal Çelik, Kılıçdaroğlu’s lawyer, it was explained that the statements Sonuç used to criticize Kılıçdaroğlu were insulting and constituted an attack on the politician’s personal rights.

Sonuç’s criticism of Kılıçdaroğlu was mostly referring to his poor performance in the presidential runoff on May 28.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan won the runoff election against a powerful opposition coalition that nominated the CHP leader as its presidential candidate, despite an economic crisis and anger over the response to February earthquakes that killed more than 50,000 people.

Erdoğan garnered 52.18 percent of the vote to Kılıçdaroğlu’s 47.82 percent.
