Turkey summons Danish ambassador over Koran burning, flag desecration by far-right group

Turkey’s foreign ministry summoned the Danish ambassador on Friday to protest and condemn recent attacks on the Koran and the Turkish flag by a far-right group in Denmark, Reuters reported.

The group, Patrioterne Gar Live, burned a copy of the Koran and a Turkish flag last week outside the Turkish embassy in Copenhagen. In response, the Turkish government urged Danish authorities to take action against those responsible and implement measures to prevent similar provocations in the future.

The ministry’s statement called the act “clear proof that Islamophobia, xenophobia, discrimination, and racism have recently increased in Europe.”

The Danish foreign ministry has not yet commented on the matter.

Tensions between Sweden and Turkey have also risen due to a January protest in Stockholm led by a far-right Danish-Swedish politician against Islam and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Turkey’s support is crucial for Sweden’s bid to join the NATO military alliance.
