Majority of Turks against Erdoğan’s reelection: poll

A recent poll has found 56.9 percent of Turkish voters are against the reelection of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan as president, the Birgün daily reported on Tuesday.

The survey was conducted by the Yöneylem Social Research Center on 3,040 voters, the majority of whom were aged between 25 and 44, in 27 provinces.

A full 32.6 percent of respondents said they would support Erdoğan if he runs again for president, while 56.9 percent said they would never vote for him and 8.1 percent were undecided, according to the survey.

When asked about the candidates they would support in the second round of a presidential election, 34.7 percent said they would support Erdoğan, while 50.4 percent said they would vote for the opposition candidate.

As for the opposition candidates, the survey found that if main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu runs against Erdoğan, Kılıçdaroğlu and Erdoğan will get 42.0 and 38.6 percent of the vote, respectively. If İYİ (Good) Party leader Meral Akşener is pitted against Erdoğan, Akşener and Erdoğan will garner 45.6 and 37.2 percent, respectively. If İstanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu contests Erdoğan, İmamoğlu and Erdoğan will secure 48.5 and 37.8 percent, respectively. Strikingly, if Ankara Mayor Mansur Yavaş challenges Erdoğan, Yavaş and Erdoğan will take 53.8 and 34.8 percent, respectively.

Erdoğan was first elected president in 2014 and was reelected in 2018 for a five-year term. The next presidential election is slated for 2023.
