Turkey has 1,248 more COVID-19 cases, 22 deaths: minister

A total of 1,248 more people have been found to have been infected with COVID-19, while 22 others have died from the disease over the past 24 hours, Turkish Health Minister Fahrettin Koca announced on Saturday.

According to a chart posted by Koca on Twitter, the total number of cases in the country has risen to 186,493, while the death toll has reached 4,927 with the latest additions.

Over the past several days, the number of new infections is in a downward trend, although it was on an upward trajectory after an easing of the anti-coronavirus measures by the Turkish government as of June 1.

A total of 1,312 patients recovered in the last 24 hours, the chart indicated.

Koca also announced the number of patients in intensive care in some provinces where the number of infections has increased over the past days.

“There are 30 [intensive care patients] in Diyarbakır, 41 in Kayseri, 22 in Batman, 46 in Bursa. The number of recovered patients is higher than the number of new cases today, too. We need to increase the difference by complying with [anti-coronavirus] measures,” tweeted the minister.

Turkey conducted 41,112 tests for coronavirus over the past day, bringing the overall number of tests carried out so far to 2,904,744.

The chart showed that 158,828 people have recovered in Turkey since the start of the outbreak, while 781 patients are in intensive care, 318 of whom are on ventilators.

Turkey reported its first COVID-19 case on March 11. The country eased preventative measures at the start of June, opening shopping malls, cafes, restaurants and mosques.
