Mob boss praises Erdoğan, Bahçeli upon release from prison

Alaattin Çakıcı

Turkish organized crime boss Alaattin Çakıcı, who was freed from prison on Thursday, has released a letter in which he applauds President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and his nationalist ally, Devlet Bahçeli, for the role they played in his release, the Diken news website reported on Friday.

In the letter, which was posted on Twitter, Çakıcı called the two leaders the architects of the legislation that led to what he called his “liberation from captivity.”

The far-right mob boss was set free on Thursday as part of a law intended to ease overcrowding in the country’s prisons amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The legislation was slammed for keeping political prisoners behind bars while releasing people like Çakıcı, who was convicted of a number of violent crimes.
