1 in 2 Turks believes measures taken by gov’t against coronavirus inadequate: poll

As Turkey has been confirming new cases of coronavirus infections, an opinion poll has shown that 45 percent of the Turkish population believes that the government has not taken adequate measures against its spread, the Diken news website reported on Monday.

The poll, conducted by the Konda polling company on March 7 and 8, showed that one in two Turks also believes that the government is not sufficiently informing the public about the epidemic.

The company concluded that the political polarization in the country has dominated the debates even during such a public health crisis and impacted the confidence that the public has in institutions.

On the other hand, while 86.5 percent claimed to know how the novel coronavirus circulates among people and 85 percent said they knew what should be done on an individual level, only 55 percent confirmed implementing personal protective measures.

In light of the figures, Konda recommended that some of the individual protective measures should be made compulsory by authorities given the fact that only half the population seems to apply them in practice.

The company also called for transparency and openness in order to ensure a general atmosphere of trust.
