US President Donald Trump is the least trusted major world leader in Turkey, while Russian President Vladimir Putin is seen as the most trustworthy, the Ahval news website reported on Monday, citing the US-based Pew Research Center.

Only some 11 percent of those surveyed in Turkey expressed confidence in Trump to do the right thing in world affairs, while Putin is the most trusted leader at 35 percent, the survey said.

Putin was followed by China’s Xi Jinping, Germany’s Angela Merkel and France’s Emmanuel Macron.

Turks gave the United States its lowest rating on the survey among countries of the Middle East and North Africa with just one in five people surveyed having a favorable opinion of it.

Anti-US sentiment has been on the rise in Turkey since a failed coup attempt in 2016 that the Turkish government frequently blames on a US-based Turkish cleric.

Relations between the two countries have been strained due to disagreements over Turkey’s purchase of a Russian-made S-400 missile defense system and the US cooperation with Kurdish militia against the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) in Syria.
