Turkey orders detention of 99 soldiers, ex-military doctors, over Gülen links

Turkish prosecutors have ordered the detention of 99 people, including military members and former military doctors, as part of a large-scale post-coup crackdown targeting followers of the faith-based Gülen movement.

Turkey accuses the movement of orchestrating a 2016 coup attempt, although it strongly denies any involvement.

Since the failed coup, thousands of military members, including generals, have been dismissed from the service, with many of them prosecuted and even jailed.

The Kocaeli Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office on Tuesday issued detention warrants for 12 military members over Gülen links, the state-run Anadolu news agency reported.

At least 10 of the suspects were taken into police custody, according to the report.

Meanwhile, the İstanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office ordered the detention of 17 former military doctors over Gülen links.

The suspects are accused of preparing fake reports for military cadets to prevent them from becoming officers.

Eleven of them were detained on Tuesday, the report said.

Police in Konya detained 36 military members after the chief public prosecutor’s office issued detention warrants for 50 soldiers over Gülen ties.

In Ankara, the chief public prosecutor ordered the detention of 20 military members for alleged Gülen membership.

Meanwhile, Bülent Kılınç, a former judge at the Council of State, on Tuesday received a seven-and-a-half-year sentence for membership in the Gülen movement.
