A group of men who are members of a theater group in the eastern Turkish province of Tunceli staged a protest against domestic violence by wearing skirts, the Demirören news agency reported.

The 10 men, who gathered in Seyit Rıza Square, remained motionless with skirts on for several minutes in a bid to show how ashamed they feel in the wake of growing domestic violence in the country.

Female thespians who also joined the protest swept up prayer beads, a symbol of masculinity in Turkey, on the ground.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Yılmaz Can Şare said cases of domestic violence are increasing in Turkey with every passing day and that Turkish authorities must take urgent measures in order to prevent more women from becoming victims of acts of violence committed by men.

Last week Turkey was shaken by the murder of a woman named Emine Bulut who was killed by her ex-husband in front of her daughter after a video showing the moments of the attack went viral online.

“I don’t want to die,” Emine Bulut, covered in blood, was heard screaming to her 10-year-old child. Her tearful daughter says: “Mum, please don’t die.”

The 38-year-old was repeatedly stabbed in a cafe on Aug. 18 by her former husband in the Central Anatolian city of Kırıkkale.

According to a report from the Stop the Murder of Women Platform, 31 women were killed by men in Turkey in July alone.
