An announcement by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) said one of the people responsible for the assassination of Turkey’s deputy consul general in Erbil was Mazlum Dağ, the brother of Dersim Dağ, a deputy from the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) in Turkey, the Diken news website reported on Friday.

He reportedly crossed the Turkish-Iraqi border in February 2015 to join the terrorist Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which is suspected by many Iraq experts to be behind the attack.

The HDP co-chairs released a statement condemning the attack and warning against provocations.

“Pointing at one of our deputies as a target because of the shooting is unacceptable,” the statement said.

There has been no claim of responsibility for the shooting, and a spokesman for the PKK denied the group was involved in it.

Meanwhile, clashes between the Turkish armed forces and the PKK have intensified, with Turkey launching an air attack on PKK-held areas in Iraqi Kurdistan and the PKK attacking a military vehicle with rocket launchers in eastern Turkey on Friday, killing one officer and wounding two others.
