Six people who were detained for beating up Turkish journalist and TV host Yavuz Selim Demirağ have been released, the Sözcü newspaper reported on Monday.

The prosecutor’s office in charge of the investigation justified its decision by citing the state of Demirağ’s health, pointing out that he did not suffer life-threatening injuries.

The suspects were released without even appearing before a court.

During questioning the assailants claimed that the incident took place due to a traffic-related dispute.

Demirağ, who writes for the government-critical and ultranationalist Yeniçağ daily, was assaulted while returning home after hosting a TV show on Friday night.

Last month a man who punched opposition leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu at a soldier’s funeral was released pending trial just a day after his arrest.
