Turkey’s Ministry of Interior has announced that a total of 21,402,953 criminal records were checked in İstanbul this year, the Diken news website reported on Wednesday.
Representing a considerable surge compared to last year’s number of some 8.6 million people, this latest statistic includes records searches for 6,477,602 people that were carried out by the recently reinstated neighborhood guards.
Within the scope of the operations, 1,349,384 vehicles were searched and 62,119 people with outstanding warrants were detained.
According to Turkish Statistics Institute (TurkStat) data, İstanbul has some 15 million residents.
