Minister’s wife gets plum presidency post after 5-year absence from civil servant job

İlknur Gül, the wife of Turkish Justice Minister Abdülhamit Gül and the daughter of the Chief Ombudsman Şeref Malkoç who was reportedly on leave for most of her time as a civil servant, was appointed to a post in the president’s office on Dec. 15, the BirGün newspaper reported on Wednesday.

Gül, who was hired by the Ankara Metropolitan Municipality during the time her husband served at ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) headquarters, was a civil servant for five years who rarely showed up for work through a series of consecutive paid and unpaid leaves.

During the five years, Gül was also briefly appointed to the Prime Ministry, where she reportedly engaged in the same absenteeism.

After the adoption of the presidential system, which led to the dissolution of the Prime Ministry, Gül returned to her municipal job until she was appointed as an architect at the Directorate of Administrative Affairs at the Presidency.

According to the report, Gül also disseminated pro-AKP propaganda during meetings she attended, in violation of the law on public officials.
