16 foreign students in Mersin detained over Gülen links

Sixteen foreign students studying in Turkey — 10 from Somalia, three from Djibouti, two from Guinea and one from Syria — were detained when Mersin police raided 10 houses as part of an investigation into the faith-based the Gülen movement, the Anadolu news agency reported on Saturday, citing the chief public prosecutor’s office.

According to the report police are still searching for seven more students who are enrolled at Mersin University.

In a separate case, at least 29 suspects, including active duty soldiers, were detained across Turkey on Saturday for their alleged links to the Gülen movement.

Thirteen active duty soldiers were detained in simultaneous operations conducted in nine provinces, including the capital Ankara, Kırıkkale in Central Anatolia and Diyarbakır in the east, Anadolu reported, citing unnamed sources.

At least 200 former serviceman and active duty military personnel have been detained since the presidential and parliamentary elections on June 24.
