[UPDATE] 84 people detained during May Day celebrations in İstanbul

Turkish riot police detained at least 84 people during May Day celebrations across İstanbul on Tuesday, according to data from the İstanbul Police Department.

The central venue of the celebrations in İstanbul was a public square in İstanbul’s Maltepe district since Taksim Square, the symbolic venue of May Day festivities, was closed by the Turkish government for the day.

Sixty people were detained in Beşiktaş, 16 in Beyoğlu, six in Maltepe and two in the Şişli district of İstanbul.

According to Turkish media over 26,000 police officers were on duty during the day in İstanbul.
