Men kill 183 women and girls, use violence against 278 in Turkey in 8 months

During the first eight months of 2017, men in Turkey killed 183 women and girls, used violence against 278 women, raped 57 and sexually abused 161 women and 236 girls, Bianet reported on Tuesday.

According to the report, 23 percent of the murder victims were killed because they wanted a divorce from their husband.

In August, men killed 13 women and five men who were with them, raped seven women, sexually abused 35 women and 21 girls, forced 61 women to work as sex slaves and injured 41 women and girls.

A transsexual woman was found dead in her home in August, and four other transsexual women were attacked and threatened with death.

Among the women who were raped, 57 percent were mentally challenged.

Of all the murdered women, 69 percent were killed by their husbands and 51 percent experienced violence from their husbands or boyfriends.
