Five Turkish soldiers were killed and nine others were injured in a car bomb attack perpetrated by Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) militants in Syria’s al-Bab region, according to a statement from the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) on Friday.
The TSK statement said the attack took place in al-Bab’s Suflaniyah area on Friday afternoon and that the injured soldiers were immediately transported to a hospital.
As part of Operation Euphrates Shield, Turkey sent tanks across the border to help Syrian rebels drive ISIL from the border city of Jarabulus in late August, in a dramatic escalation of its involvement in the Syrian civil war.
The number of Turkish soldiers killed during Operation Euphrates Shield has risen to 50 with the latest losses.
