Man turns girlfriend in over Gülen links after rejection of marriage proposal

A man in a small Aegean district of Turkey turned his girlfriend in to the police, alleging she is a Gülen movement sympathizer, after she rejected his proposal of marriage.

In Turkey, being an alleged sympathizer of the Gülen movement is grounds for becoming the subject of an investigation, detained or even arrested since the movement is labeled as a terrorist organization and accused of plotting an abortive coup on July 15.

The incident took place in the town of Germencik in Aydın province between two secretaries working at the same courthouse. E.K. proposed to K.E., who he has been dating for some time, but when he was turned down, E.K filed a complaint against K.E., accusing the woman of ties to the Gülen movement.  In addition, the man also informed on M.S., who he claimed had destroyed the relationship between the two.

Oda TV published the complaint on Tuesday. The prosecutor’s office launched an investigation after receiving the complaint, while M.S. was hospitalized due to the shock of the incident.
More than 41,000 people have been arrested as part of a massive purge of followers of the Gülen movement.

The pro-government media constantly runs stories demonizing the movement.
