Another police officer commits suicide after being suspended in gov’t witch-hunt

A police officer identified only by the initials E.O. committed suicide in the courtyard of the Bayburt Police Station after he was suspended over alleged links to the Gülen movement, which the government accuses of masterminding a July 15 coup attempt.

Turkey’s National Police Department on Monday suspended 12,801 officers in the latest wave of a clampdown on the movement.

Among those suspended, 32-year-old E.O. shot himself dead on Wednesday night in the courtyard of the Bayburt Police Station where he came to hand over his service revolver. He succumbed to his injuries at Bayburt State Hospital.

Turkey is no stranger to such cases. A 50-year-old teacher in Bilecik, M. G., committed suicide shortly after he was removed from his job over alleged Gülen links.

Similarly, a Mersin police officer also shot himself dead the day after he was suspended due to alleged ties to the Gülen movement, on Tuesday. (Turkey Purge)
