Galatasaray expels 5 including former footballers, governors over Gülen links

The disciplinary board of the Galatasaray football club on Wednesday expelled from membership three former players and two former governors who are currently under investigation over alleged links to the faith-based Gülen movement.

The former football players are Hakan Şükür, Arif Erdem and İsmail Demiriz, while the governors are former Bursa Governor Şehabettin Harput and former İstanbul Governor Hüseyin Avni Mutlu.

As part of an ongoing witch-hunt against the Gülen movement, arrest warrants were issued last month for Şükür, Erdem, Demiriz and another former footballer, Uğur Tütüneker, due to their alleged links to the movement.

Demiriz and Tütüneker were briefly detained earlier this month, while Erdem and Şükür are currently out of the country.

Both former İstanbul Governor Mutlu and former Bursa Governor Harput were arrested in August over alleged links to the Gülen movement.

Turkey survived a military coup attempt on July 15 that killed over 240 people and wounded more than a thousand others. Immediately after the putsch, the Justice and Development Party (AKP) government along with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan pinned the blame on the Gülen movement.

Despite Turkish Islamic scholar Fethullah Gülen, who inspired the movement, and the movement having denied the accusation and calling for an international investigation, Erdoğan — calling the coup attempt “a gift from God” — and the government launched a widespread purge aimed at cleansing sympathizers of the movement from within state institutions, dehumanizing its popular figures and putting them in custody.
More than 100,000 people have been purged from state bodies, nearly 43,000 detained and 23,500 arrested since the coup attempt. Arrestees include journalists, judges, prosecutors, police and military officers, academics, governors and even a comedian.
