Report:  91 Turkish citizens included in Zarrab’s case

At least 91 Turkish citizens were included in a case in which an Iranian-born Turkish businessman, Reza Zarrab is tried on charges of evading the US sanctions on Iran, a report by the news portal haberdar.com claimed on Friday.

Citing sources close to the Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, the report said that the office is getting ready to contact these 91 people soon and could request for some of them to be arrested.

The report also claimed that there were also government officials, politicians and businessmen amongst the 91 people.

The businessman was arrested in the United States in March on charges of conspiring to make financial transactions for the Iranian government to evade US sanctions.

The case captured a high amount of public interest from Turkey as Zarrab was also included in a corruption probe in Turkey.

Zarrab was previously detained in Turkey as part of a corruption investigation which implied several Turkish politicians and their sons in 2013. However he was released after then-Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan accused the prosecutors and police officers who conducted the corruption investigation of trying to “topple the Turkish government.”

A court hearing is scheduled on June 2 to address to bail issue requested by Zarrab’s lawyer.
